HIV Anonymous Testing and HIV Documented Testing

Anonymous Testing

UIUC students can schedule an appointment for Anonymous HIV Testing by calling the Dial-a-Nurse (DAN) at 333-2700. To ensure anonymity, the student will be asked to give only a first name when scheduling the appointment. The DAN will inform the student of the name of the provider, directions to the office of the provider, as well as the appointment time.

Students scheduling an HIV appointment are encouraged to schedule an STI Testing appointment as well. The STI appointment is separate from the anonymous HIV appointment and can be scheduled through DAN or My McKinley.

Students should plan on the appointment, including the visit to the lab for the blood drawing, to take one hour. During the appointment, the provider will discuss HIV transmission, reasons for testing, risk assessment and reduction, and the testing process. The student will be assigned a code number, provide consent, schedule an appointment for one week later to get the results, and then go to the lab where the blood will be drawn for the test (less than a tablespoon is drawn).

Orasure oral testing is available for an additional $5.00 charge.

The antibody for HIV can take up to 3 months to develop to a level detectable by the test. The test may not be reliable if any possible exposures have occurred within the 3 months prior to the test date.

Students can cancel appointments for anonymous HIV testing by calling the DAN at 333-2700 and providing the first name used when scheduling the appointment, or by calling the McKinley Health Center cancellation line 244- 6066 and leaving the student's first name, time and date of the anonymous testing appointment, and the name of the provider.

Confidential HIV Tests

Confidential HIV antibody tests for ROTC, passports, or other purposes are also scheduled through the DAN at 333-2700. Unlike anonymous testing, results are posted in the patient chart. Confidential tests are not released without specific written authorization from the patient.

It is the student's choice whether to have an anonymous or confidential/documented test.  If you have questions, please review: Anonymous vs. Confidential HIV Testing at McKinley Health Center.
