Self Care Following Cervical Biopsy

  1. Following a cervical biopsy, it is normal to have a brown or blood stained discharge for a few days. You may wear a pad as necessary. If heavy bleeding occurs, call: McKinley Dial-A-Nurse at 333-2700.

  2. No strenuous or vigorous activity for 48 hours.

  3. No vaginal intercourse, douching or tampons for 3-4 days.

  4. If you develop a fever, foul smelling discharge or severe cramping, call the Women's Health Unit or Dial-A-Nurse at the number above.

  5. The biopsy will be sent to the pathologist for review. Your health care provider will instruct you on how best to obtain the results of your biopsy.

If you are a registered University of Illinois student and you have questions or concerns,
or need to make an appointment, please call: Dial-A-Nurse at 333-2700

If you are concerned about any difference in your treatment plan and the information in this handout,
