Weight management can seem daunting at first, but don’t give up hope that you can reach your goals! Healthful weight loss and maintenance has been possible for thousands of Americans.

The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) provides some of the most promising information about weight management strategies that have been successful. The NWCR is a database of over 2700 adults who have lost at least 10% of their initial body weight, and they have maintained the loss for at least a year. Studies of NWCR participants reveal several common practices.

  • Controlling calories – Participants follow a reduced calorie diet.

  • Reducing fat – Over 75% of participants consume fat within the USDA recommended range.

  • High physical activity – NWCR participants are active! All expend more than 2300 calories per week through exercise.

Whether changing your weight is your goal or if you are just trying to eat healthier, Phase 2 of this program will help you put some new habits into practice. As mentioned previously, during Phase 2 students can either make an appointment with a nutrition educator for personalized counseling or register for the Living LEAN program for group support.

The Living LEAN program meets once per week and offers a series of fun and interactive group sessions. Participants can:

  • Learn about nutrition and exercise

  • Check, record, and track their weight and BMI anonymously

  • Check, record, and track their waist circumference and body fat anonymously

  • Ask a nutrition or fitness educator questions in a relaxed and non-threatening environment

Living LEAN meets weekly at SportWell Center; located at the Oasis in the Illini Union throughout the fall and spring semesters.

Call 244-0261 or 333-2714 to reserve your spot in the class. Or, drop in without a reservation.

The Living LEAN class schedule can be found here: Health Education Calendar of Events.

To finish Phase 1, complete the quiz on the next page. Then you can make your appointment. Be sure to bring your self-evaluation worksheet and food journal.
